About the Role

Staffordshire University’s Department of Computer Science is excited to offer a position for a Research Fellow dedicated to developing innovative deep learning models. These models will be used for object detection, classification, re-identification, and counting, specifically tailored for nature conservation stakeholders as part of the Nature-First project.

Project Overview

Nature-FIRST aims to enhance nature conservation efforts across Europe by developing predictive, proactive, and preventative capabilities. This interdisciplinary project integrates ecological theory, environmental forensics, and both satellite-based and on-site environmental observations to create a tested and demonstrated Proof of Principle in 4 European regions covering 6 biogeographical areas.

Responsibilities

Develop and refine advanced methods for deep learning and computer vision applications.

Conduct high-level research in collaboration with senior academic staff.

Engage in data collection, analysis, and the development of new computer vision techniques.

Assess competitive software to identify strengths and weaknesses, and compile comprehensive reports.

Disseminate research findings through academic conferences and public engagements.

Develop high-quality techniques for object detection and related fields.

Support and mentor students through workshops using cutting-edge software and direct case studies.

Maintain and expand collaborations with academic and industry partners.

Requirements

Proven experience in developing deep learning models for computer vision applications.

Proficiency in Python programming.

Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Professional Development

Engage in continuous professional development and training as required by the project and university policies.

Contribute to the university’s Environmental Sustainability Policy through responsible practices.
