Staffordshire University is on a journey to become the foremost modern higher education institution in the UK, with an international reputation for excellence, and we are looking for inspirational and effective people to take us to the next stage.

In 2018 we broke in to the World University rankings for the first time and were named as a top 50 UK university by the Guardian. The quality of our student experience has placed us in the top 10 for teaching quality in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 and in 2019  we achieved a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Many of our students come from areas with low rates of participation in higher education and we continually strive to ensure the courses we offer meet the needs of people and employers. We are expanding our non-traditional, flexible study options, particularly in apprenticeships serving the public sector.

You can join us at a time when we begin the next step of our transformation journey. The new £40m Catalyst Building will deliver 6,500 new apprentices in the next decade, boosting both the local and national economy. The development of our offer to new academic areas and geographic locations will see us expand our reach and make an innovative offer to a new generation of students.

We are a university of and for our community: local, national and global. If you share our values and have the skills to deliver our vision, we want to hear from you.

Staffordshire University seeks an experienced and enthusiastic candidate to join our Sports Journalism team within the Department of Film, Media and Journalism. Staffordshire University has recently been awarded Gold TEF status and Journalism was recently rated 5th for Sports Journalism in the Guardian 2020 rankings.

The successful candidate will be based at our Stoke-on-Trent campus and will have significant experience as a professional sportswriter and provide leadership and specialist teaching to the Sports Journalism programmes at UG and PG levels, as well as contribute to the general administration of the courses and to the outreach activities of the Department. Knowledge and understanding of the NCTJ and as well as the ability to provide teaching support to the MA Journalism award and the BA (Hons) Digital Content Creation would be beneficial.

We are looking for an experienced professional sportswriter, an enthusiastic and committed colleague, who is dedicated to the student experience, teamwork and continuous academic/professional development. The successful candidate will be eager to create and nurture industry connections, embedding this knowledge exchange firmly into the Sport Journalism curricula at Staffordshire University. A doctoral level qualification in a relevant discipline is desirable, though not essential.

In return for your dedication we have a competitive benefits package available

  • Competitive incremental rates of Pay
  • 37 days Annual Leave plus 11 days Bank Holiday and Discretionary days
  • Excellent Pension Scheme
  • Access to continued professional and personal development
  • An opportunity to become part of the wider University community
